Math 128 Lab 4: The gutter problem (page 1)

A rain gutter is to be constructed of aluminum sheets 12 inches wide.  After marking off a length of 4 inches from each edge, this length is bent up at an angle x (see the figure below).

The cross sectional area of the gutter changes as the angle x changes.  The goal is to understand how the cross sectional area changes as a function of  x, and to find the largest possible cross sectional area in order to maximize the flow of water in the gutter.  

The questions for this laboratory are to be answered in eCampus.  You can open a eCampus window and use it as you proceed through the computer screens of lab activities.
