TEXTBOOK: Matroid Theory, by James Oxley, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1992.

 

PREREQUISTE:   Linear Algebra or Algebra (Math 341, 343, 541, or 543) and Graph Theory (Math 503), or consent of the instructor.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION: the following topics will be covered:  Different axioms of matroids, duality, minors, graphic matroids, representations, connectivity.

 

HOMEWORK and EXAMS:  There will be biweekly homework assignments, two midterm exams and a comprehensive final exam. The homework average will contribute 50\% of the student’s grade; the two midterm exams together will comprise 25\% of the student’s grade and the final will be worth 25\% of the student’s grade.
