Periodicity and Indecomposability of Inverse
Limits on [0,1]
The talk will be suitable for a general audience.
Students are strongly encouraged to participate.
Abstract
This talk will focus on some simple properties of mappings of
the interval [0,1] such as the property of having a periodic point of
period three. Li and Yorke popularized period three several years ago in
their paper, "Period three implies chaos," which appeared in 1975 in the
American Mathematical Monthly. Specifically, we discuss mappings which
produce an indecomposable subcontinuum when used as a single bonding map in
an inverse limit system. The talk will be aimed at a general audience.
