## Research

My research began in differential geometry, focusing specifically on the geometry and topology of a class of knots parametrized by the two-jet extensions of periodic functions called holonomic knots. More recently, I have focused on extending the notion of knot energy to higher dimensional surfaces. In addition to this area, I have used topological tools to study the reliability of machine learning algorithms used for data mining and autonomous control systems. This has led to the study of social networks and data analysis on large data sets and the implementation of genetic algorithm based planning systems for UAVs. In the area of mathematics education, I have focused on professional development interventions for elementry, middle and high school in-service teachers and the effects of placement on student success in entry level undergraduate courses.
