Math and Chemistry Current Students Placement Chart - Fall 2019

ALEKS scores are different from exam grades. Math 126 (College Algebra) requires a minimum ALEKS score of 45. Math 122 (Quantitative Skills and Reasoning) requires a minimum ALEKS score of 30. Math 122 is a two-credit preparatory course for College Algebra (Math 126) and *does not* fulfill the WVU general education math requirement.

Note:You will not be permitted to take a math or chemistry course that is above your readiness level, even if you are only one point away. If you want to place into a higher-level course, you may use ALEKS learning modules to improve your skills and retake the assessment. You must qualify for a class before scheduling it. At the beginning of the semester, students who do not meet criteria for a class are removed from the roll.

Chemistry 117 -
Principles of Chemistry

Chemistry 117 is a limited enrollment, Honors-level general chemistry course designed for first-year students with strong chemistry and math backgrounds. Students may qualify for Chemistry 117 by meeting the requirements for Chemistry 115 and declaring a major in Chemistry, having a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Chemistry examination, OR by having 640 SAT Math/28 ACT Math scores and an appropriate background in Chemistry. Interested students may contact Professor Betsy Ratcliff at betsy.ratcliff@mail.wvu.edu for more information about the Chemistry 117 course content and their level of preparation for the course. Completion of CHEM 117 and 118 in place of CHEM 115 and 116 also provides credit for CHEM 215.
