WebDAV
WebDAV stands for "Web-based
Distributed Authoring and Versioning". It is
a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol
which allows users to collaboratively edit
and manage files on remote web servers.
Within the Math Department, we use WebDAV to allow groups of faculty members to edit different parts of our main website.
Managing Files
If you have a Math Department computer account, you can use the
following instructions to manage files on the parts of the website for
which you have permission. This enables you to copy files and
folders to/from the server, as well as delete old files. Use
caution though, and always save a copy of the file you are modifying or
deleting.
Throughout this document, "username" and "password" will be used to
refer to the user name and password for your Math Department account.
Windows XP
- Find "My Network Places" either in the Start menu, or under "My Computer"
- Click on "Add a network place"
- Select "Choose another network location"
- For the network address, enter: https://math.wvu.edu/webdav/
- Note the trailing slash! It is required.
- Accept the security certificate that is presented to you.
- Click "Next" and "Finish". You may be asked to accept the certificate again.
- A shortcut to "webdav on math.wvu.edu" will appear under "My Network Places"
* Bug: There is a known bug in Windows' handling of WebDAV. Sometimes saving or deleting a file will fail without asking you for a password. If this happens, go back to the main WebDAV folder and click on the "dept" folder to force a password prompt.
Linux (Gnome desktop)
- Click on "Connect to Server..." in the Places menu.
- For Service type, select Secure WebDAV
- For Server, enter: math.wvu.edu
- For Folder, enter: webdav/
- Note the trailing slash! It is required.
- Click on "Connect"
- A shortcut to "webdav on math.wvu.edu" will be added to your places menu and desktop.
You will be able to view all the public files without entering a
password. You will only be prompted for your username and
password when you first attempt an operation that requires special
permission.
