Algebra Placement 
 
The algebra portion of the placement exam consists of 25 multiple choice questions.  They cover material from what is roughly equivalent to high school Algebra I.  The topics include

  • order of operation
  • rules of exponents
  • simplifying expressions involving radicals and exponents
  • working with variables
  • factoring and distributing
  • solving simple linear and quadratic equations

There are some word problems.  All questions are multiple choice and include the possible answer of "None of these is correct" so that educated guessing is typically not a useful strategy.  

The algebra portions of the samples found here will allow you to practice your skills for this part of the exam. This link leads to the LA Valley College practice test website which provides a a good sample of problems representative of those you will see on the WVU exam.
