Email Setup

The Department of Mathematics provides email accounts for our faculty, staff, and graduate students.  Your Math Dept. address is automatically added to one of several mailing lists used for internal department communications.

Checking your email:

  1. Set up your Math Dept. account in your email program.   If you know what you are doing, skip ahead to the email settings at a glance.
  2. If you are at a public computer, you can log in to our web mail system.

 

Email settings at a glance:

  • email server: math.wvu.edu
  • supported protocols:
    • imap4
    • pop3
    • imaps
    • pop3s
    • smtp
  • LDAP address book: directory.math.wvu.edu
    • Base DN: ou=people,dc=math,dc=wvu,dc=edu

 

Outgoing / SMTP server:

You must use the outgoing mail server provided for you by your local internet service provider (ISP).  For example:

  • smtp.comcast.net - if you have Comcast cable internet
  • outgoing.verizon.net - if you have Verizon DSL
  • math.wvu.edu - if you are in Armstrong Hall
  • smtp.wvu.edu - if you are on any other WVU campus network, including wireless

Email Programs:

Select your email program from the list:

  • Mozilla Thunderbird (Windows, Mac, Linux)
  • Novell Groupwise (Windows)
  • Novell Evolution (Linux, Mac)
  • Microsoft Outlook (Windows)

Thunderbird

Math account setup

  1. Download and install Thunderbird from http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
  2. The first time you launch Thunderbird, the Account Wizard will start.  If you are asked to import settings, select "Don't import anything".  If this is not your first time, open the "Account Settings" window, found under the "Edit" or "Tools" menu, and click the "Add Account" button.
  3. Make sure "Email account" is selected, and click "Next".
  4. Enter your name as you want it to appear on the emails you send, and your Math Dept. email address in the format "username@math.wvu.edu", then click "Next".
  5. Select "IMAP" as the type of incoming server, and in the box marked "Incoming Server", enter: math.wvu.edu
  6. For outgoing server, enter the SMTP server provided for you by your ISP.  Click "Next".
  7. Verify that your "Incoming User Name" is the one for your Math Dept. account, and the "Outgoing User Name" matches your account with your Internet Service Provider, if they require authentication for outgoing mail (most do not).  You should not need to change anything, so click "Next".
  8. Accept the default account name by clicking "Next".
  9. Review your account settings and click "Finish".
  10. When prompted for your password click "Cancel".
  11. Return to the Account Settings window (under Edit or Tools).
  12. Click on "Server Settings" under "username@math.wvu.edu" in the left hand pane.
  13. On the right, under "Security Settings", select "SSL" for "Use secure connection".  Click "OK" when finished.
  14. Click on your Math Dept. mailbox on the left side of the main window, under "Folders".  You will be  presented with a security certificate from our server.  Select "Accept this certificate permanently" and click "OK".
  15. Enter your Math Dept. password, and check the box to allow the Password Manager to remember your password.
